Damp and Mould When the Weather Turns Cold: What Should You Check?
Practical advice for homeowners, tenants and landlords across Wirral, Liverpool, Chester and North Wales
As temperatures drop, many people start noticing condensation, damp patches or mould in their homes. Cold weather can make existing moisture problems more obvious, but the appearance of a damp mark does not tell you what caused it. Condensation, water entering from outside, leaks and other building defects can look similar, so it is worth checking the evidence before paying for remedial work.
Could it be condensation?
Condensation happens when moist air meets a colder surface. It is often noticed on windows, in room corners, behind furniture or in bathrooms and bedrooms. Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and drying clothes indoors add moisture to the air. Limited ventilation, cold surfaces and poor air circulation can contribute.
Wiping away window moisture, using extractor fans and allowing air to circulate may help manage everyday condensation. If mould keeps returning, spreads, or appears alongside other signs of damage, do not assume ventilation is the only issue.
Check for water getting in
Penetrating damp may be linked to a defect that allows rainwater to enter, such as damaged roof coverings, leaking gutters, cracked render or pointing, or gaps around windows and doors. Note where the damp appears and whether it changes after rainfall. The outside of the building may hold important clues.
Marks near the base of a wall, damaged plaster or salt deposits can also have several possible explanations. These signs alone cannot confirm rising damp. A proper assessment considers the pattern of moisture and the condition of the building inside and out.
Get the cause checked before paying for treatment
Different causes need different responses. A damp-proofing treatment may not solve a leaking gutter, a plumbing leak or a condensation problem. Before agreeing to costly work, ask what evidence supports the diagnosis and whether other likely causes have been considered. A moisture-meter reading on its own should not be treated as a complete diagnosis.
An independent damp inspection can help identify the likely cause and set out practical next steps. NW Snag Surveys carries out damp and mould inspections for homeowners, tenants and landlords across Wirral, Liverpool, Chester and North Wales, with a photo-led report and clear recommendations.
Tenant damp inspections are £199 and landlord damp inspections are £279. Contact me with your postcode and a brief description of the issue to check availability and confirm the right service for your property.
